What to Look for in a Nurse Practitioner School- Part 1
For many of us, deciding to continue our education or to go back to school as a working professional is a big decision in and to itself. If you are in this boat, welcome aboard! It is my goal to help you navigate the sometimes difficult and confusing waters that is trying to find the right nurse practitioner school for you.
First you have to ask yourself “why?” Why are you wanting to go back to school? Are you looking to accomplish an existing goal? Is it part of the natural progression for your career? Make more money? Notoriety? Your answer will be one you will want to refer back to when you need the motivation when times get a little tough and you ask yourself “what in the world did I get myself into?”
Next you will want to visualize where you see yourself working:
Do you like regularly scheduled patients in an office setting? If so, then you will want to look for a Primary Care program.
Do you like the unexpected patient census with various possible working hours in a hospital setting? If you answered a resounding “yes!” then you will want to look into an Acute Care program.
Now the compass is pointing you in the direction that requires you to figure out what kind of patients you want to serve.
Anytime I would interview a new nursing student I would always ask what kind of patients they saw themselves working with. The general type of response would be something along the lines of “I want to work with babies or old people…they are just so cute!” Then I would ask them the same question after they started doing their clinical rotations and there was always a handful of people that would change their story to something along the lines of “I can’t handle these kids! I want to work with another group!”
But since you most likely have some “miles” under your nursing belt, chances are you know what type of patients you want to serve, even if it means there is a new group you want to change to.
Stay tuned for Part 2 HERE.
