Good vision and healthy eyes are important at any age, but even more so for children. A child’s vision problems can greatly affect their performance in school and their self-confidence. Fortunately, most potential vision problems are identified and treated early and those that may not be obvious until much later are caught by preschool eye tests or pediatric checkups.

Vision changes often occur without anyone noticing, but regular screenings can help determine if young children need glasses or contacts. Children should have regular vision tests during their pediatric appointments or earlier if you notice any of the following:

  • Squinting while trying to focus.
  • If the child states that things are blurry or hard to see.
  • Lack of interest in reading or distant objects.
  • Family history of hereditary vision problems.
  • Wandering eye or crossed eyes.

Common vision problems in children include:

Refractive errors include both myopia (nearsightedness) the most common refractive vision problem among school-aged children and hyperopia, or farsightedness can usually be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Symptoms often include headaches, blurred vision, and eye strain.

Amblyopia or “lazy eye”, affects about four out of every 100 people and occurs when one eye has not developed normal sight. Once detected, lazy eye can be corrected with glasses, surgery, or an eye patch over the stronger eye to strengthen the “lazy” eye.

Strabismus double vision caused by crossed eyes as one eye focuses straight ahead while the other eye turns in, out, up or down. Strabismus requires early treatment and cannot be outgrown, glasses may improve focusing.

Color vision deficiency or color blindness may be hereditary and involves the inability to distinguish between colors or shades of colors. Their is no “cure” for color blindness but the condition may be improved through tinted glasses or contact lenses.

Conjunctivitis, or pink-eye, is a highly contagious infection of the eyelids which become crusted by discharge. Additional symptoms include red or pink eyes and burning and itching. Conjunctivitis is treatable with antibiotic drops and ointments.

Corneal abrasions often occur during outdoor sports and recreational activities, and usually in children and teens. If left untreated, eye injuries can cause permanent damage a child’s vision and may even cause blindness.

You can reduce or avoid eye injuries by securing household items that may cause damage like caustic cleaners, sharp tools, scissors and even pencils in younger toddlers. Provide age appropriate toys without sharp or protruding parts. Your child should wear protective eyewear when involved in sports, especially those with high velocity action like tennis, lacrosse and hockey.  

Pay close attention to how your child appears to view the world. Frequent head tilting, squinting, eye rubbing, excessive tears, or sensitivity to light and headaches are all signs that your child may have vision problems that should be checked out by a trained clinician. Click Here for More



Psoriasis, one of the most common skin diseases, is most often associated with red, itchy, scaly patches which usually occur on the knees, elbows, and scalp, but occasionally affect the torso, palms, and soles of the feet. Diseases that stress the immune system often “trigger” psoriasis and for children, triggers include measles, chickenpox, and mumps.

There are five distinct categories of psoriasis, plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, and erythrodermic psoriasis.

Plaque psoriasis. *

Eighty percent of psoriasis sufferers have plaque psoriasis and present raised, red patches that display a white, shiny scaling. These patches are called “plaques” and are usually in individual, isolated areas, but may grow together to form a larger plaque. Plaque psoriasis occurs most often on the elbows, knees, and lower back, and is associated with stress.


Guttate psoriasis. **

Guttate psoriasis is often linked to a bacterial or viral infection and usually appears first on the trunk of the body and then the limbs. This type of psoriasis occurs most frequently in young adults and children and appears as tiny, red tear-shaped marks on the skin. Most cases of guttate psoriasis are mild and will soon resolve without medication.

Pustular psoriasis. ***

Pustular psoriasis affects fewer than five percent of those with psoriasis. As the name suggests, pustular psoriasis involves raised pus-filled pustules. Pustular psoriasis is a serious condition that often leads to extended medical treatment and hospitalization. It occurs most often in adults and is often triggered by cortisone, streptococcal bacteria, and hormonal changes related to pregnancy.

Erythrodermic psoriasis. *
Erythrodermic psoriasis symptoms include red, inflamed, and scaly eruption that may cover most or all of the body. Erythrodermic psoriasis is a serious condition and can be fatal as it interferes with the skin’s ability to regulate body temperature causing high fever, infection, and dehydration. Erythrodermic psoriasis often requires hospitalization and systemic medical treatment.

Inverse psoriasis. ****
Inverse psoriasis often occurs in folds of the skin of overweight patients below the breasts, in the armpits and genital areas. Often misdiagnosed as a yeast infection, inverse psoriasis is caused by friction and sweating and produces glossy and shiny red tender patches as opposed to scaly patches.

Psoriasis is not contagious. Treatment for psoriasis varies greatly by individual and what works for one patient may not work for another. Psoriasis requires treatment by qualified physicians and dermatologists to determine which treatment the patient responds to. Treatment plans are based on the type of psoriasis, the severity and location, the patient’s sex and age.

Without vaccinations your child runs a greater risk of contracting the diseases those vaccinations were developed to protect against. Without vaccinations your child could contract serious diseases that are otherwise preventable such as measles, rubella, and whooping cough and face the risk of hospitalization, brain damage, paralysis, or death. According to a 2009 study published in the journal Pediatrics, children who are not immunized against whooping cough (pertussis) are 23 times more likely to catch the disease.

If you live in a large city, your child is at greater risk for contracting diseases if they are not vaccinated. Large cities and metropolitan areas are often travel hubs for airports and tourists and thousands of potentially contagious people pass through these cities every day, increasing the chances of contracting what should only be “third-world” diseases. 

Non-vaccinated children may be (legally) banned from day care facilities, public schools and after-school programs based on their immunization records. During a potential outbreak, un-immunized children and their families may be quarantined. Are you prepared to explain the concept of quarantine to your children? Similarly, if your child is not vaccinated, he or she faces many travel restrictions and may not be allowed to travel.

Non-vaccinated children are a health risk to individuals with weak or compromised immune systems including infants and children, all pregnant women, and the elderly. Children without vaccines are potentially dangerous to people with serious diseases such as leukemia and cancers, or those who cannot receive immunizations for health reasons. Are you prepared to explain to your child why they cannot visit a sick relative, grandparent or pregnant aunt?

My kid is safe. If you believe that your non-vaccinated children are “safe” as the majority of other children are immunized, remember that a non-vaccinated child will always be at greater risk of contracting an otherwise avoidable disease.   It is now a requirement that any time your child rides in an ambulance, or is taken to the emergency room or the pediatrician’s office, you must inform admissions and the physicians of your child’s lack of immunizations and vaccinations. This is to make the doctors aware and how to properly approach the current situation. Doctors, and especially pediatric clinics can refuse to schedule or treat non-vaccinated children as it puts their other patients at risk.

Before you make the decision to NOT immunize your child, research and ask questions and talk to your pediatrician (not celebrities). Your decision affects not only your child, but everyone around them as well.

When you slouch or lean forward or to either side, the resulting imbalance causes bones, ligaments and muscles to strain and fatigue leading to even greater imbalances. When you stand, the middle of the ear should line up with the middle of the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. When you sit, the middle of the ear should line up with the middle of the shoulder and hip.

Breathe evenly and deeply. Taking a deep breath lifts your diaphragm, ribcage and oxygenates your body and allows you to release tension.  

    1. Many people with lower back problems and back pain have overly tight muscles and lack flexibility. Stretch your upper back, your iliopsoas muscle and your calf muscles. Stretching your upper back will decrease strain and increase mobility. The iliopsoas muscle is a deep set lower back muscle that connects your spine, pelvis and the top of the thigh. Your calf muscles are distantly connected by fascial tissue that run the length of your body from the bottom of your feet to your neck and the base of your skull. Releasing tension in your calves will help relieve stress all the way up to the skull.

  Develop your core. When your abdominal muscles and the muscles that surround and support your spine are strong and toned they work together to support your skeleton and improve your posture. Your lower back pain may be a sign of weak core muscles and today’s prolonged periods of sitting at work also weakens your core. A stronger core will also improve your body movement and flexibility, and should always include rotational exercises to stretch and strengthen the areas immediately involved in spinal rotational and twisting movements. Pilates is one exercise approach that focuses on building core strength and improves flexibility, but there are many effective exercises to help you strengthen your core muscles.

While we enjoy being out in the sun, unfortunately too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause a host of problems. Too much exposure can cause all manner of problems with your skin, the most severe being cancer, melanoma and carcinoma. Exposure to sunlight and solar radiation can also cause wrinkles, dry skin and premature aging.


Sunlight emits both UVA and UVB rays, both are harmful to the skin. UVA rays emit a longer wavelength and penetrate the layers of the skin causing a tan, overexposure to UVA rays can cause direct skin damage. UVB rays affect the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. Sunburn is a result of overexposure to UVB rays. Both UVB and UVA rays play a role in causing skin cancer and UVA rays also promote premature wrinkling.


Sunlight does have its health benefits. Exposure to sunlight stimulates your body’s vitamin D production. Sunlight increases the number of white blood cells in your body thus increasing your body’s immunity. Sunlight also improves your sense of happiness and wellbeing and protects you from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression common during winter season when there is little sunlight.

Sunscreens and sunblocks can protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. Sunblocks literally block both types of harmful rays, if you use a sunscreen, ensure that the label indicates protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Protecting your skin from UV rays can minimize the appearance of wrinkles and age spots and greatly reduce your risk of cancers, melanoma and carcinoma.   Some additional sunlight and UV considerations you should be aware of:

  • Some medications increase your sensitivity. Oral contraceptives, antihistamines, antibiotics and high blood pressure drugs may increase your sensitivity, check with your medical provider.
  • UV rays can burn through three feet of water. Swimmers also need protection from sun damage. Use sunscreen before going into the water and re-apply liberally after swimming.
  •  Protect your eyes. Lengthy exposure to UV rays can harm the lens, retina and cornea of your eyes and eventually lead to cataract formation. Wear sunglasses.
  • Dark skin needs protection. While darker skinned individuals as a general rule are able to withstand more sunlight, dark skin does burn and is susceptible to skin cancers. Use sunscreen and avoid overexposure.
  •  Children are more susceptible to direct and indirect UV radiation. Small children and especially babies under six months have thinner and more sensitive skin. Check with your pediatrician if you plan extended periods of sun exposure.

Our bodies are made up primarily of water, yet we rarely drink enough of it to stay properly hydrated. Water helps our bodies work at peak efficiency. We learn as children about the importance of drinking water yet somehow we forget to use that water fountain or water bottle as we grow older, which is unfortunate as there are so many benefits of drinking water.

Water keeps you hydrated. Chronic dehydration often caused by a combination of too much caffeine and cola and too little water can cause headaches, dizziness and hypotension, and low blood volume. Water also fills your cells, tissues and organs, helps produce synovial fluid to cushion your joints and also helps cushion your brain and spinal cord.

Water keeps your skin healthy. Water moisturizes your skin from the inside out. If you (and your skin) are dehydrated it will “tent” when pinched and very slowly return to its original position. Your skin when properly hydrated should immediately snap back when pinched. Water also promotes sweating, that may seem unpleasant, but sweating removes harmful toxins from the skin.

Water maintains blood volume. The blood in your veins that carries vital oxygen and nutrients throughout your body is primarily water. Dehydration causes “hypovolemia” or low blood volume and leads to dizziness, fainting and eventually hospitalization. Easily avoided by adequate water intake.

How can you tell when you are dehydrated? Unfortunately, the most reliable signs of dehydration, thirst and dark urine, only appear when you are already dehydrated. Interesting fact, if you have the sensation of thirst, you are already a liter of fluid behind. You may soon experience a headache and feel slightly dizzy. As the dehydration progresses, you may become tired and lethargic, exhibit dry flaky skin, and experience short-term memory loss. Severe dehydration usually caused by environmental factors, overheating and exhaustion, or neglect will need to be medically treated, often by the introduction of intravenous (IV) fluids to quickly restore blood volume and to re-hydrate the patient.

Men’s Health Month


June is Men’s Health Month, an annual month-long event centered around Father’s Day intended to help raise awareness of health issues important to men. Men’s Health Month is celebrated across the country through health screenings and fairs, media promotion, and health education and outreach activities designed to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease.


The goal of Men’s Health Month is to raise awareness of preventable men’s health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of diseases including:


Prostate Cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. Symptoms of prostate cancer vary but are similar to those of an enlarged prostate including difficulty urinating, frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine stream, and blood in the urine. Men over 50 and those with a family history of cancer have a greater chance of developing prostate cancer. Screening for prostate cancer through a Prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test or by a digital rectal exam may allow for early detection and treatment.


Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women. More than 150,000 people die from lung cancer annually and 90% of lung cancers are linked to cigarette smoking. Screening is recommended for people at high risk based on their smoking history and age or prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke and may allow for early detection and treatment. The most important step you can take to prevent lung cancer is to stop smoking (or to never start).
Colorectal Cancer or “colon cancer” affects both men and women and is the second-leading cancer killer. This form of cancer is most often found in people 50 years of age or older. A colonoscopy can locate precancerous polyps which can then be removed before becoming cancerous. Screening also helps detect colorectal cancer at an early stage, when treatment may lead to a cure. Nine out of ten people whose colorectal cancers are found and treated early are still alive five years later.


Bladder Cancer is similar to prostate cancer and may, in fact, be a result of cancer of the prostate growing or metastasizing (spreading) from the prostate. Recent research suggests that bladder cancer may also be the result of environmental factors, chemical exposure, smoking and diet (specifically Saccharin). Chronic bladder infections have also been linked to bladder cancer. Bladder cancer affects approximately 200,000 primarily older adults annually. The most common symptom is blood in the urine and is treatable if diagnosed early. Bladder cancer is persistent and known to recur, follow-up tests are recommended.


Skin Cancer (Melanoma) Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. There are three types of skin cancers, the two most common are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas (cancers) both of which are curable. The third skin cancer Melanoma, is more aggressive and lethal, while not the most common of the skin cancers, it does cause the most deaths. Skin cancers are most often caused by exposure to ultraviolet sunlight. Changes in the skin, a sore that will not heal, a new growth or a change in the size, shape or color of a mole are the most common signs of skin cancer. Frequent full body skin examinations and identifying abnormalities will increase the chances of early detection and treatment through a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Brain Injury

There has been much mentioned lately about the dangers of concussions and the risks involved when young people play sports. Concussions are now considered to be a mild brain injury and while initially may not appear to be serious, can result in later consequences if not looked after at the time of the injury. It is important therefore that coaches, teachers and parents who are involved in youth sports be made aware of concussion prevention, recognition and response.
